About Us

College Station day care with an internationally recognized curriculum

In 1981, Syed and Muneer Hyder left all they knew behind to chase the American Dream. They had left India several years earlier and after spending some time in the United Kingdom, they settled in College Station, Texas with their young family and high hopes for the future.

Muneer Hyder was a teacher whose mission was to positively impact the lives of young children. The couple decided to buy a small run-down day care center and invest all of their time and energy into making it into one of Bryan’s best preschools. Kiddie Castle Children’s Center was the result of that commitment to the education and nurturance of young children.

Over the next several years, the family worked diligently together to expand Kiddie Castle into several locations, including south College Station. This location was later converted into a Montessori school that is now known as Southwood Learning Center.

We are honored to be members of the BCS family for over 35 years. Today, the family of Kiddie Castle–Southwood Learning Center schools are proud to be second generation owned and operated preschools.

Our Journey

A Legacy of Learning Since 1981

1981

The Beginning

A young family comes to Texas with a simple dream: to build a better future by caring for and educating children.

Kiddie Castle

The First Chapter

They take a chance on a small daycare in Bryan and transform it into a thriving preschool known as Kiddie Castle Children’s Center.

1985

Southwood Begins

The vision expands to College Station. Southwood Learning Center opens its doors as a Montessori school, beginning a tradition of Montessori education in the BCS community.

Today

The Legacy Lives On

Over four decades later, Southwood remains family owned and operated. Generations of children have grown here, and our commitment remains unchanged: nurturing confident, capable children through exceptional Montessori education.

Montessori Philosophy

Education that follows the child

Maria Montessori

A pioneer who trusted the child

Maria Montessori, born in 1870, was the first woman to receive a medical degree in Italy. She worked in psychiatry, education, and anthropology, and believed each child is born with unique potential to be revealed — not a blank slate waiting to be written upon.

Her methods were based on scientific observation of how children actually learn. The classroom should reflect natural life, and children benefit most from working and living freely in a prepared environment. The teacher’s role is to adapt that environment and direct each child so they can fulfill their greatest potential — physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually.

A century after Maria Montessori’s first casa dei bambini (“children’s house”) in Rome, Montessori education continues to empower and enlighten today’s youth.

The Method

An internationally recognized curriculum

The Montessori Method has been practiced for over 100 years. It encourages children to develop respect for themselves, for others, and for the environment while working at their own pace, in their own interest areas.

Children are drawn to particular work during “critical periods” — optimum times of learning. The teacher observes and prepares a space where each child can choose work in reading, writing, arithmetic, geography, science, practical life, and sensorial activities. Uninterrupted work periods build concentration and a genuine pleasure in learning.

Mixed-age classrooms of 3–6 (including kindergarteners) mirror the real world. Older children mentor younger ones; younger children are motivated by their peers. Grace and courtesy are fundamental, helping children develop healthy social and emotional skills.
